Quirgit

Quirgit is another experiment on how personal memories and daily impressions form links and new ideas in the mind at one particular moment, sometimes in the most unexpected combinations. It is a snapshot/a moment of perception embodied and expressed through a single figure.
One day I was dismantling an old waistcoat, a garment which no longer served its original function. However, for me it stored a wealth of personal memories and while playing with the material I suddenly remembered two strong female characters from two different novels I read when I was very young. Both of them are orphans, both have to cope on their own (literally and as outsiders in a group) and both have to cope with a harsh and cold environment (one in Greenland in the 16th century, the other one in Ice Age Europe). Clothes-making and how to keep warm feature a lot in the novels, and through this I made a connection to the material in my hands, which would eventually become the figure Quirgit.
