Tracie Peisley was born in Kent in 1965, an Artist for 30 years she completed her first degree at Bath College of Higher Education. Inspired by the women’s Art Movement of the 1970’s, Tracie Peisley’s art practice was challenged and dissected by a rigorous feminist discourse.

Insatiably curious and committed to her own creative process, Tracie works from her unconscious, trusting an experimental approach to using different media. Her work is grounded in an early commitment to observational drawing and painting. The late Peter Kinley focused on encouraging Tracie’s use of colour, edges and quality of line.

She experienced a dilemma, wanting to paint and liking the work of Paula Moderson-Becker, Matisse, Picasso, Rouault and Clemente, while also responding to the confessional, autobiographical work of Louise Bourgeois, Jo Spence, Kiki Smith and Nan Goldin. She was also inspired by the thrashing out of a liberated looser figurative, mixed media way of working in the Post-Modern art of the day, e.g. Schnabel and Fischl.

In 1989 Tracie undertook an MA at Birmingham Polytechnic. Her commitment to following her subconscious led to the quest to understand the symbolic significance in this work and led to an Art Therapy MA at Hertfordshire University in 2003. The outcome of this experience was Tracie’s complete liberation to work in any medium, as her ideas found expression through media such as paint, collage, ceramic and cloth. Tracie graduated with a profound understanding of her own creative process and latterly applied this to working with others.

Tracie works in series, the properties of different media offer different ciphers for the content in her subconscious, which seeks to be seen. There is an ambition in each piece to make disparate parts harmonious. To make the precarious – manageable.

The Pandora’s Other Box project was founded in 2004. The project is for women creatives, to expand their sense of what might be possible given a supportive environment, enrichment workshops and a curated exhibition.
Tracie is a prolific Artist, making new work continually with a sense of personal urgency and greed for the thrill of expressing, in a raw or sophisticated way, her thoughts and feelings.

Tracie directed and curated the Pandora Other Box SKIN exhibition of 50 women Artists at The Horsebridge Art Centre, Whitstable in August 2017, she shows regularly in Kent, including a solo exhibition at The Fish Slab Gallery in November 2017 and won the Bridging Medway Art Competition at Nucleaus Arts, Chatham in September 2017 with her metaphorical ceramic work.

In March - April 2018 a gallery of photographs at Turner Contemporary, Margate, commemorated the ‘Trophy Project’ which celebrates women’s achievements, conceived and directed by Tracie in partnership with Clayspace Studios and Pow Thanet. Tracie was invited to the Turner to be a ‘Talking Head’ with her couture clothing in 2016.
